Chapter 30: Not Always a Hero


The group was all back at Amy's house and were occupying their time in different assignments. Tails and Knuckles were trying to devise a machine that was just like Eggman's machine, but had the opposite objective. Amy was making dinner, while Rebecca skimmed through some of Amy's books. Sonic was in one of the rooms resting.

Rebecca: You have a lot of books, don't you? (While skimming through one.)

Amy: Yeah… I haven't gotten the time to read them though. (Boiling some water in the pot.)

Rebecca spotted a dusty blue one. The cover was washed away by time and was covered with ripped leather. She grabbed it and opened it and looked at each page. It wasn't a novel or a book of information, but one of pictures and old smiles. It was Sonic, Amy, Tails, and Knuckles, when everything was bright and dandy. The days were normal and just the common fights with Eggman.

Rebecca: What's this? (She said confused.)

Amy glanced over the counter and smiled.

Amy: Oh! That's just a scrapbook. It's nothing really.

Rebecca: I have never seen one before, only in movies. My family didn't have this.

Amy: Why not? It's a good way to remember them.

Rebecca: Yeah… (Looking displeased.)

Amy turned on the faucet to wash her hands.

Rebecca: My family wasn't the kind that liked all this stuff. They were really politicians and other kinds of crap.

Amy: Oh, really? You must have had a lot of money. (Turning off the faucet.)

Rebecca: Yeah… and because of that I had to have a guardian protect me when I was little.

Amy: Was he bad?

Rebecca closed her eyes.

Rebecca: No. He was the best thing that has ever happened to me. How could he be bad? He protected me. He saved me. He sacrificed himself for me. (She closed the book.)

Amy: Just like my Sonic used to do. (She sighed.)

Rebecca: And still does… (She chuckled.)

Rebecca walked down the hallway and heard some noises in Sonics' room. She placed her hand on the doorknob and turned it, leaving a slight opening.

Rebecca: Hello?

Sonic: Doesn't anyone knock anymore. (He yawned. He must have been taking a nap.)

Rebecca: Sorry. I thought I heard something.

Sonic: Can I ask you a question?

Rebecca: Sure.

Sonic: Do you have anything to do with Neo?

Rebecca: It depends.

Sonic: Ok, tell me.

Rebecca: Promise you won't freak out if I say this?

Sonic: You think I'm going to fre….

Rebecca: I used to be dead.

-Moment of silence between the two.

Sonic: WHAT!!!??!! WHAT THE HELL!!! ARE YOU SERIOUS? YOU'RE JOKING!

Rebecca: No, I'm not. I died a couple of times…

*Sonic pauses and starts having a spasm attack*

Okay, now he's fine…. Go on.

Sonic: Okay, but how? (Calming down.)

Rebecca: Well, when I was younger I drowned in a frozen lake. My father broke the ice and drowned me to get these powers. It was really weird when I was told that I had come back to life.

Sonic: Yeah… that explains a lot… I think?

Rebecca: Then, when I was about 9 or so, my home was invaded by those shadow creatures and…

Sonic: Wait… WHAT?! You mean that the shadow creatures existed before all this… I mean the only way that's possible is either Eggman or …

Rebecca: Neo.

Sonic: What happened?

Rebecca: My family was attacked by Neo and Ion. I was at the lake with my guardian when he came. He killed my parents and everyone else just for the fun. When I came back, he was still there.

Zonic: Wait…. I remember…. I was there….

Sonic: (Thinking) What? You can't be.

Rebecca: He was going to do the same thing that he is trying to do to you. He wanted control, and when he came at me… my guardian…

Zonic: Stepped in the way and took the attack...

Sonic: (Thinking) That was you?!

Zonic: Please ask her the name…

Sonic: What was his name?

Rebecca: It was Zanthus.

Sonic: Zanthus?

Rebecca: His name meant"protector".

Sonic: What happened?

Rebecca: Well, he sacrificed himself for me and he died, I suppose.

Zonic: Yeah, but then I turned into this…

Sonic: Okay… let me get this straight. Neo came, killed your family, found you, killed Zanthus, and then...

Rebecca: He spared me… I hated him for that.

Sonic: But why?

Rebecca: I don't know. Anyways I grew a bit older and came here and fought alongside him in battle.

Sonic: The Battle of 57'.

Rebecca: Yeah. The dumbass couldn't recognize me.

Sonic: Wow. Does anyone else know about this?

Rebecca: Tails found out the war thing by himself… he's not too happy.

Sonic: Yeah, that would be obvious.

Rebecca: I admit I have done some things I'm not proud of, but it was necessary.

Sonic: Isn't that everyone? I mean look at me. I have a freak attack whenever I turn into that beast at night.

Rebecca: Speaking of which, the sedative is still in effect?

Sonic: I suppose. Do you think I'll transform in the morning?

Rebecca: Probably.

Sonic: Oh man, I can't go out looking like that, people will freak!

Rebecca: Who said anything about you going out? (She laughed)

Sonic: Funny…

Rebecca: I was looking through a scrapbook and found some old pictures of you guys.

Sonic: Yeah, when everything was fine. (Looking away)

Rebecca: Yeah.

Sonic: I can't believe I let this happen. It's my entire fault. I did this all to myself and I dragged you guys down with me.

Rebecca: Not really, we just came along for the fun. (She smiled)

Sonic: I doubt I would be called a hero anymore. I mean I'm getting worse, I've been hearing and seeing things and I just think I'm going insane.

Rebecca: Hey it's natural to feel like that. A lot of people wouldn't have it together the way you do.

Sonic: Yeah, but still…

Rebecca: Sonic, sometimes we do bad things to do good things.

Sonic: What do you mean?

Rebecca: Well, you went and let Neo take control of you, so he would let us go.

Sonic: Yeah and that didn't end too well.

Rebecca: It wasn't the smart thing to do, but it was the right thing to do...

Zonic: In another universe.

Sonic laughed a bit.

Rebecca: What's so funny?

Sonic: Nothing.

Amy knocked on the door and entered the room.

Amy: The food's ready.

Rebecca and Sonic glanced at each other and walked towards the kitchen where they met Tails and Knuckles. Sonic looked at Amy and smiled.

Sonic: (Thinking) I guess it was the right thing to do.
